Terra Synthesis project evolved around mountainous desert in Southern California, taking inspiration from ancient Mayan ruins of Cantona in Mexico. The precedent informs a series of exercises to layout the terraces and organize the buildings in Desert Hot Springs.
Series of artificial landscapes generated with neural networks are superimposed onto the site. The buildings form along the edges with access to public plazas and private spaces.
The strategy of overlaying, extracting and shaping the outlines of the walls and openings further delineates facades and internal layout.
Gabion walls allow daylight to filter into interior spaces while fractures provide connection between the levels.
Hydroponic farming systems defined by planter modules weave through the ground and walls. The modules form connections within the system allowing different configurations of assembly and organization of space, while providing the source of fresh greens and vegetables to the residents.
Desert Hot Springs is known for its thermal springs. The recreational spa areas with natural mineral pools serve the occupants and their guests.
